Airstrike hits aid group's hospital in northern Yemen

Following the fatal bombing of the Médecins Sans Frontières (doctors without borders) hospital in Yemen's Hajjah province on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the global community's deplorable silence on the attacks against schools and hospitals has encouraged Saudi Arabia to keep committing such crimes.

MSF said more than 4,600 patients had been treated at the Abs hospital since MSF began supporting the facility in July 2015.

It's the fourth attack on an MSF-supported facility this year, the group said in a statement.

"Once again, today we witness the tragic consequences of the bombing of a hospital", she said.

The air strike, believed to have been conducted by the Saudi-led coalition, took place in the Abs district of Hajja province and according to MSF, resulted in the deaths of 10 patients and a staff member of the aid group.

The attack in Abs comes less than 48 hours after MSF said a coalition air strike on a Koranic school in Saada's Haydan district had killed 10 children.

He said the coalition, which launched strikes against the Houthi rebels in March past year, would do "whatever it takes" to restore security in Yemen.

The group, known by the French acronym MSF, said the strike hit the hospital near the Houthi rebel stronghold of Saada, where teams were still attending to the wounded.

Northern Yemen has been hit by frequent airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition which supports Yemeni President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi against the mainly Shiite Houthis, who control the capital Sana'a.

Earlier in the day, residents in Nehm area, east of Sanaa, said a plane from the Saudi-led alliance struck the home of a local leader of Yemen's armed Houthi group while he was out, killing his father and eight members of the family.

"Medical teams are assisting the wounded & toll is still unknown", it added.

A Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf countries has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at the Yemeni government's request.

"People in Yemen continue to be killed and injured while seeking medical care", Sancristóval said.

Amnesty International said the incident was an "atrocious attack that could amount to a war crime".

The Monday airstrikes on the hospital, believed carried out by the Saudi-led coalition, killed six people, health sources said, less than two days after similar raids killed 10 children and sparked worldwide concern.

In Yemen, the Saudi involvement behind the strikes is likely because the facilities that have been hit have been in rebel Houthi areas. Both Amnesty International, as well as a spokesperson for United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, have issued statements condemning the attack.
