Armed police order woman to remove burkini on French beach

The pictures show the woman, who was lying on the sand, being confronted by four police officers on a beach in Nice on Tuesday.

In Nice, France this week, armed police walked onto a beach and forced a woman to shed her clothes.

The woman was issued a ticket for not wearing "an outfit respecting good morals and secularism", reported Agence France-Presse.

The 34-year-old former air hostess, named only as Siam, was approached by three officers while at La Bocca beach in Cannes with her young children, and was ordered to take off her floral-patterned headscarf.

"Journalists at the scene said that a pack gathered around the woman and "used racist terms freely", saying thins like 'Go home!' and 'we're Catholics here!'"

She added: "Her daughter was crying".

"The burkini is the uniform of extremist Islamism, not of the Muslim religion", Lisnard said in defense of his recent injunction, which was issued in the wake of terror attacks in Nice and Rouen.

Just 12 days later a Catholic priest was brutally murdered near the northern city of Rouen. The ruling which bans burkinis in Cannes states: "Beachwear which ostentatiously displays religious affiliation, when France and places of worship are now the target of terrorist attacks, is liable to create risks of disrupting public order which it is necessary to prevent".

France's highest administrative court will review the bans on Thursday, after French NGO the Human Rights League appealed the measures. TIME reports that Sydney resident and burkini designer Aheda Zanetti has seen a surge in burkini sales-even for non-Muslim women. "I was stunned - racist terms were used freely", Siam told French news magazine L'Obs.

The officers were enforcing the ban on burkinis, asking a woman lazing on the beach to take off the headscarf.

More than 10 towns in France have banned the burkini, swimwear which covers most of the body and is favoured by some Muslim women.

"I am horrified by what happened".

Several other cities on France's Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts have banned burkinis this summer following heightened tensions in France preceded by series of attacks by the Islamist State.

The town of Villeneuve-Loubet was one of the first of some 15 French towns to follow the example set in Cannes, imposing similar beach rules.
