Japan settles for silver in team table tennis

In a 3-0 whitewash that lasted just one-and-a-half hours, Li Xiaoxia (picture, right) and Liu Shiwen utilised booming smashes and prodigious spin shots to overcome Han Ying and Petrissa Solja, of Germany, without dropping a game in the opening singles matches.

Japan's 15-year-old Mima Ito won the game that secured her country a women's team bronze medal, triggering an emotional reaction from her team mate on Tuesday. "Losing that game made the competition more anxious and exciting".

Laura Trott became the first female athlete representing Britain to win a fourth Olympic gold medal after wrapping up women's omnium title.

Liu Guoliang, who has been at the helm of the Chinese men's team for more than a decade, said he's happy to see a new generation growing into the leading figures of China's table tennis.

In a match that started with Japan getting an 11-4 win, the China duo of Zhang and Xu would sweep the next three sets 11-6, 11-9, 11-5 to give China a 2-1 advantage going into match four.

Of course, the main event Tuesday night will be the gold medal match, as China looks to defend their London gold against Germany, who were the beneficiary of that four-hour marathon against Japan in their semifinal.

Singapore's dream of winning a table tennis medal at a third consecutive Olympics came to an end early this morning (Singapore time). "I'm the reason we lost today", she said. "Recently, I feel my opponents are afraid of Jun Mizutani", he said. Then he got too carried away by the prospect of upsetting the best player in the world, and promptly dropped the next four games.

The next singles match between Yu Mengyu, who was also eliminated in the singles quarter-finals, and Jeon Jihee was a tense affair, as the Korean world No 11 paddler - buoyed by chants of "Daehan Minguk" from the fans in the arena - took the first two games 11-8, 11-4.

"The three of us together are very strong, while breaking through one of us is possible, breaking through us three will be very hard".

China's Zhang Jike, right, and Xu Xin, left, serve to Japan's Maharu Yoshimura and Koki Niwa during the doubles portion of the men's team table tennis gold medal competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016. "We came here to try to win two team gold medals, but the women's team couldn't do it".
