Paris tourism has lost €750 million since terror attacks

Team France celebrate upon their return to Paris

Senior-level sources from the French tourism sector estimate that France's revenue from tourism, which now constitutes 7% of the country's GNP, has dropped by more than 750 million euros in the past year as a result of the terror attacks that have plagued the country.

After months of terrorist attacks across France, the economy of Paris has lost nearly $1 billion in tourism revenue in the first half of 2016 compared to the first six months of 2015, according to a Tuesday report.

About half a million people in the greater Paris area have jobs linked to tourism, making it the biggest industry in the region.

Among the causes of the phenomenon are the terrorist attacks, extended strikes and the floods that hit the city in June.

Tourism typically provides more than 7 percent of France's gross domestic product, at a time when the country is trying to boost its economy.

Nightly hotel stays were down 8.5 percent in the first half of 2016, with an 11.5-percent drop in foreign visitors.

Paris tourism has lost €750 million since terror attacks

In 2015, France drew a record high of 84.5 million foreign tourists, despite terror attacks that rocked the French capital in January and November, according to government data. It was dealt further blows in July when a gunman drove a truck into crowds celebrating Bastille Day on July 14 in the Riviera city of Nice.

The tourism sector now constitutes 7% of France's GNP, but this figure is expected to change due to the drastic drop in the number of tourists entering the country and bringing foreign money into the local economy.

Wealthier tourists in particular were staying away from Paris, with high-end places to stay reporting declines of between 30-40%.

Compared to previous year, 46.2 percent fewer Japanese tourists visited Paris, 35 percent fewer Russians, 27.7 percent fewer Italians and 19.6 percent fewer Chinese.

"Tourism activity is affected by attacks in Paris, Brussels, Nice, social movements and floods". Air France-KLM has said it expects its unit revenues to decline in July and August, partly due to the situation in France.

"This is no longer the time for communication campaigns but to set up a relief plan".
