NJ home explodes after neighbor smells gas; injuries unclear

Witnesses reported smelling gas shortly before the blast.

The explosion took place at a two-family home on Goshen Street at about 9:25 a.m.

Public Service Electric & Gas says it doesn't yet know what caused the explosion Tuesday morning in Paterson but is working with local officials to investigate. When firefighters arrived at 9:05 a.m., they heard a hissing sound and proceeded to evacuate residents on Goshen Street and neighboring streets.

Authorities say it appears no residents were injured when an explosion destroyed two multifamily homes in New Jersey.

- No one was hurt when two houses were destroyed and at least two other houses suffered significant damage in an apparent gas explosion in Paterson, New Jersey.

Homes and businesses on several nearby blocks were evacuated as a precaution. Many residents were congregating in a nearby park, awaiting word on when they would be allowed to return home.

Amazingly, no one was seriously injured after responders had evacuated everyone prior to the blast.

Neighbors and authorities said that before the blast a rush of gas was so powerful that a hissing sound could be heard on the street, accompanied by a strong gas smell.

Gas officials were also on scene to determine if a leak caused the home to explode. The 11 people who lived in the houses are believed to be accounted for, authorities added.

The utility said it won't be able to inspect its gas facilities that serve the home where the blast occurred until debris is cleared from the site.
