Angry Paris Protest Over Killing of Chinese Man Runs Into Second Night

Riots in Paris

Shaoyo Liu was shot dead in front of his kids on Sunday by a plainclothes police officer, as he cut up fish with scissors at his home. Police say they were responding to reports of a disturbance, broke down Liu's door, and then saw him, lunging towards them, holding what was described as "a bladed weapon", before he was shot. Ten people were arrested in a second night of protests in Paris over the killing by police of a Chinese father of five, an incident that has caused tensions with Beijing.

Clashes erupted in Paris Monday after protesters in Paris' 19th arrondissement gathered to honor the memory of a slain Chinese national. The man did not rush towards the officers, and the police 'shot without warning, he said.

"We know this investigation has caused considerable turmoil", he said.

A parked auto was set on fire, with firefighters rushing to extinguish the blaze.

French-Chinese were outraged at the police killing of a Chinese man in his home.

Calvin Job, a lawyer for the family, said Liu "was not someone undergoing psychiatric treatment, he wasn't an alcoholic, there was no history of family violence", and they do not know who called authorities to the building or why. The police said they opened fire after the man attacked them with a pair of scissors, however, the man's family denied this.

"The security of all Chinese nationals in France is a priority of the French authorities", Beijing worldwide affairs spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a statement, according to French broadcaster BFMTV.

China's Foreign Ministry says it has summoned a French envoy in Beijing over the police shooting of a Chinese man in Paris.

The statement adds: "Meanwhile, we hope that our citizens in France can voice their wishes and demands in a lawful and reasonable manner".

Chinese government has urged French government to protect Chinese community in France.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the victim's eldest daughter said the family were still trying to come to terms with the killing.

Lui says the Chinese population frequently feels like police response comes very late and that victims wait a long time.
