Back at Georgetown, Ewing eyes 'new era' as basketball coach

Patrick Ewing Hire Was A Home Run For Georgetown

The setting was the recently opened John R. Thompson Jr. And he also promised something else. "We need to get back to the way it was". No one liked us. "Hoya paranoia. Rough-and-tumble Big East". But if there is one thing that you can expect will ring true, it is those words from Ewing.

Ewing leads the Knicks franchise in most major statistical categories, including 11 All-Star selections during his 15 seasons in NY.

He was the centerpiece of 15 seasons in NY, glory days that were never quite glorious enough. He worked for Michael Jordan in Charlotte.

But when he was in NY, if he didn't win it all, he was unquestionably a victor.

But it's the past 15 years - the work Ewing has done behind the scenes without complaint and without wavering - that matter most now.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Patrick Ewing says "it's great to be back" at Georgetown as its basketball coach in hopes of creating a "new era", 33 years after leading the school to a national championship as a shot-blocking center. He started with Doug Collins in Washington, then joined Jeff Van Gundy in Houston, then Stan Van Gundy in Orlando, then Steve Clifford in Charlotte.

During his introductory press conference inside the Thompson Athletic Center, the 144,000 on-campus practice facility still sporting that new auto smell, the longtime National Basketball Association assistant stated he was intimidated by becoming a first-time head coach on any level. He interviewed in Charlotte once and then in Sacramento past year, but despite the cries from fans and media, he never got a chance in NY as the Knicks ran through a procession of coaches - outsiders, retreads and unproven fliers. A few tidbits: After coaching in the NBA, Georgetown was the only college gig he would take; he's always valued his former coach John Thompson Jr.'s advice and will continue to do so; and he's not anxious about recruiting. For day one, that just what the fans and the program needed.

Ewing shared his thoughts on taking the job in a statement released by the university.

"His vision, his hard work, his dedication, has helped to lift the program to where it's gotten", Ewing said.

If Donald Trump was the head coach of Georgetown basketball, he wouldn't be able to hire his daughter, or son-in-law.

The Georgetown press conference began with the school's president John DeGioia declaring, "No. 33 is coming home".

But I'm naive enough to think Patrick Ewing in a 17-year-old's living room pitching the Hoyas still has some sway.

"If it was any other university, I wouldn't be doing this", he noted. "But it's my alma mater, Georgetown". "Georgetown is my home and it is a great honor for me to return to my alma mater and serve as the next head coach". The search for a replacement, a task led by vice chairman of the board of directors Paul Tagliabue and athletic director Lee Reed, was not going to be easy-especially because John Thompson Jr. still yields a lot of power on the Georgetown campus. Having a guy who really understands that - preferably a guy who has played there - it helps, particularly with the younger guys to make the transition easier.
