Central Illinois farmers welcome ag secretary confirmation

"I have faith that Governor Perdue will put the needs of farmers and ranchers first, and I know that rural America is thankful to have such a qualified agriculture secretary on their side".

Sonny Perdue is the 31st Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture, confirmed April 24 by the U.S. Senate.

"I think he brings a lot to the table for producers in the United States, and specifically for producers right here in Central Illinois", said Uphoff, who serves as district 11 director for the Illinois Farm Bureau representing DeWitt, Piatt, Macon, Shelby, Moultrie and Christian counties. He served as Georgia's governor from 2003 to 2011.

A statement from the National Turkey Federation (NTF) said the following: "Perdue understands that agriculture is the foundation of our nation and that, given a strong economic environment; America has an unmatched capacity to help feed a hungry world".

Democrats surely think so. In August 2016, Heitkamp began laying the groundwork for a robust 2018 Farm Bill with a two-day tour across North Dakota, meeting with farmers, ranchers, researchers, and other agriculture leaders in the field to get their feedback ahead of the upcoming Farm Bill negotiations. The Southern businessman-unrelated to and unaffiliated with the owners of food and poultry companies Perdue and Perdue Farms-takes charge of the USDA as the agency faces deep cuts despite an agricultural downturn.

"Following his confirmation, Perdue will need to work immediately to address the depressed farm economy, offering assistance to struggling farmers across the country". Davis Perdue, R-GA, just voted "present", but was given the honor of announcing the vote, confirming his cousin Sonny's successful nomination.

At his hearing, he pledged to help senators sustain popular crop insurance programs and fix problems with government dairy programs. "His long-standing ties to major agribusiness and chemical companies have made him out of touch with American values", said Tiffany Finck-Haynes, Friends of the Earth Food Futures campaigner.

It also fills a gap that troubled some crop and livestock producers across USA farm states, which heavily factored into Mr. Trump's electoral victory in November. There are now more than 100,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) employees under his direction. Perdue is scheduled to make his first remarks to USDA staff members at 9:00 am Eastern time Tuesday morning. The order comes shortly after the President announced the US will put a tariff on Canadian soft wood imports in response to the neighbor to the North's longstanding tariff on diary products that hurt American farmers.
