Telemedicine can fill in for mental health professionals' shortage: Mukherjee

World Health Day on Apr. 7

April 7 marks the anniversary of the WHO's initiation, which was founded in 1948. While it may seem hard to get excited about yet another "world-something-day", this year, simply acknowledging World Health Day as a company could leave you with a healthier, more productive workforce.

Subramaniam said this year's World Health Day theme underscores the importance of addressing depression, reducing the stigma surrounding it, and encouraging more people to get help.

Depression is a mental disorder that commonly occurs in people with stress, those that have experienced psychological trauma in daily life with family members or social connections or after they have suffered from other illnesses, affecting their physical health and ability to study and work, according to WHO.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are yet again lending their voice to those living with mental illness, this time with a 10-part film series through their mental health campaign Heads Together.

More than 300 million people around the world are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015.

"Depression is a mental disorder, and according to the World Health Organisation it is the leading cause of disability worldwide", says Dr. Pablo Vandenabeele, Bupa's Clinical Director for Mental Health. "We encourage patients to book an appointment with their local health centre should they need to discuss general well-being", said Dr Fatema Mohammed Musa, Head of Service Development at PHCC. Mental health disorders span a very wide range from simple disorders to very complex situations.

GETTYWorld Health Day 2017 seeks to highlight depressionWhat is World Health Day?

However, failure to do so can be costly. This year's focus is on depression. On average, just 3 per cent of government health budgets are invested in mental health, varying from less than 1 per cent in low income countries to around 5 per cent in high-income countries including the UK.

Dr Noor Hisham said the public should be more open-minded to understand and to give support to individuals suffering from depression, but those who were living in depression should also be more open-minded, not only to seek help and treatment, but also to talk to someone about it.

The organization released a series of short videos that address various symptoms of depression within different age groups, from adolescents and young adults to the elderly. Lack energy? Struggle sleeping?
