What the death of broadband privacy rules means

In essence, this reverses President Obama's endorsed Federal Communications Commission rules supposed to take effect later this year, which would have required internet service providers to have your consent before they sold it.

The House voted 215 to 205 in favor of striking the regulations, following the Senate's resolution to do so last week.

Leading Democrat Nancy Pelosi said the Republican-led effort was putting profits over the privacy concerns of Americans. "With few exceptions, Americans have no right to say 'don't sell my data, '" she said.

Your personal information will soon be even more exposed on the internet because Congress just passed a new law eliminating privacy rules for internet providers.

Republicans and industry groups have blasted that discrepancy, saying it is unfair and confusing for consumers.

Undoing the FCC regulation leaves people's online information in a murky area.

"We are talking about taking privacy rights away from individuals if we suddenly eliminate this rule", Nelson said. But critics said the rule would have stifled innovation and picked winners and losers among Internet companies. "All actors in the online space should be subject to the same rules, enforced by the same agency", Pai and acting Federal Trade Commission (FTC) chairwoman Maureen Olhausen said in a joint statement earlier this month.

The US Congress has voted to overturn what had been the strongest privacy protections afforded to broadband customers. So if President Donald Trump signs the measure, as the White House has indicated he will, the status quo will remain.

But rather than apply similar protections to more businesses, the Republican-controlled Congress voted to scrap the rules entirely. Popular Internet Service Providers include Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T. However, some claims that they give customers the option of opting out for such data collection, but none can really tell if such ISPs really do what they say.

While consumers do have a choice, they have overwhelmingly chosen sites and apps that sell their information.

Although this law passed in the Senate and has a likely chance of being signed by President Trump, there's still a few ways to keep your browser history private.

But whichever way the Trump administration tries to spin it, this development will be seen as a major blow to consumers and privacy advocates, as ISPs will only have to comply with a loose baseline of rules.

Many broadband providers already share some of their customers' browsing behavior with advertisers. Minnesota, for instance, requires internet service providers to get customer permission before sharing their web-browsing histories. They got just $77,000.

A VPN (virtual private network) adds security and privacy to the Internet, public and private networks and WiFi hot spots.
