Armed rebels in C. African Republic city agree to leave

Armed group kills UN peacekeeper in Central African Republic

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of MINUSCA Parfait Onanga-Anyanga vigorously condemned the attack, adding that "MINUSCA will do everything in its power together with the legitimate Central African authorities to arrest the perpetrators of these frightful acts".

"The armed elements continue to systematically and deliberately attack the MINUSCA base with heavy weaponry to impede the peacekeepers from doing their extremely vital task of protecting the civilian population and to divert them from their primary vocation of saving lives", the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the country, known by the French acronym MINUSCA, said in a statement.

Herve Verhoosel, spokesman for the United Nations mission, told Reuters: 'The situation is extremely deplorable and we are doing everything to rapidly retake control of Bangassou'. It can not yet determine a civilian death toll. Numerous fighters are child soldiers who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, he added.

The Catholic Church in the Central African Republic has attempted to persuade the militias to end the assault and leave the town, according to Catholic charity organization Caritas. MINUSCA recalls that acts of violence on ethnic or religious grounds may constitute crimes under global law subject to prosecution in domestic or worldwide courts.

CAR President Faustin Touadera said Sunday he intends to go to Bangassou to give his "support to the wounded population".

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also expressed "outrage" and called on the authorities to "investigate the attacks to bring those responsible to justice".

In recent months, roaming militias spurred by ethnic and religious rivalries have stepped up violence despite pledges to take part in a government-led disarmament program. "His life is not in danger", the United Nations mission, which is known by its French acronym, said, identifying him as a Moroccan soldier. In January 2017, two Moroccan members of FAR squad of the MINUSCA were killed in an armed attack near the town of Bria on the northeast of the capital Bangui.
