Cyber attack targets two Dublin hospitals

At least 74 countries affected in 'biggest ever' cyberattack

Thousands of Irish hospitals thought to have been hit during the major cyber attack on the NHS were infected by a separate, older virus, it has emerged.

About 52,000 PCs and 2,350 servers in the Health Service Executive (HSE) have had anti-virus software deployed as IT experts moved to counteract the threat of the global "ransomware".

Mr Cobridge said that "all [HSE] clinical services and computer systems have been protected from the virus and no data or information was compromised as a result of the attempted cyber attack".

The news comes after the HSE made a decision to keep its network isolated from external communications for a further 48 hours as a protection against cyber attack.

The HSE is hoping to reconnect its internal IT network to the outside later this morning after four days of being disconnected out of fears of infection with the WannaCry ransomware virus.

Fianna Fáil spokesman for health Billy Kelleher said more needed to be done to ensure the virus, which is still active, was stopped from infecting the HSE's computer system.

Denis Naughten, Minister for Communications, Climate Action & Environment, briefed a cabinet sub-committee at Government Buildings on the issue and warned: "It is still possible that further incidences will arise and a sustained period of vigilance will be required, both in terms of updating and patching software and monitoring equipment".

However, he said the PSNI "cannot rule out the possibility that local systems may be vulnerable".

The state's cyber security chiefs were also liaising with the Garda Cyber Crime Bureau and the Defence Forces.

In England, 48 NHS trusts fell victim, as did 13 NHS bodies in Scotland.

HSE chief information officer, Richard Corbridge, said that disruption to patients was minimal as the outages were expected.

Northern Ireland computer networks may have been infected by a virus that plunged parts of the NHS elsewhere in the United Kingdom into chaos, police have said.

This means that the organisation will not be accepting any external emails. "This incident has tested our people and our processes and provided us with huge learning to build upon", he said.

"If anyone has reported a child protection concern to Tusla by email since Friday evening, please be advised that this may not have been received", she said.

Emails into the HSE will continue to be blocked until Wednesday.
