Frat brother speaks out about alcohol-related death at Penn State

US university fraternity brothers facing 850 charges in death of pledging student

Davis would be questioned months later by detectives about the night of February 2, when Timothy Piazza, a 19-year-old Penn State sophomore from New Jersey, fell down a set of basement stairs at the same fraternity house.

Penn State President Eric Barron said Beta Theta Pi has been banned from ever returning to the school. The victim, who was going through the Beta Theta Pi initiation, died of a head injury when frat members allegedly hesitated to call 911 after he suffered a head injury repeatedly falling down a flight of stairs following a night of heavy drinking.

"Some of them described that he looked dead and they waited over 40 minutes before they called for help, while some of them Googled things like 'What to do with a head injury, '" said Stacy Parks Miller, Centre County district attorney.

Friday, involuntary manslaughter, hazing, and other charges were filed against eight fraternity brothers including Gary DiBileo Jr. of Scranton. Other charges included hazing, aggravated and simple assault, alcohol-related violations and evidence tampering.

An attorney for the chapter didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

When police were finally summoned, they rushed Piazza to the hospital, but he died the next morning. Prosecutors said the pledges were pressured to chug vodka, shotgun beers and drink wine.

Piazza tumbled down a flight of stairs that night and fell several other times, injuring his head, Miller said.

Prosecutors in Pennsylvania are set to announce the results of a grand jury investigation into the death of a Penn State student who fell down steps during an alcohol-fueled pledge ceremony. At the time he fell, expert testimony claimed his blood-alcohol level was somewhere between.28 and.36 percent.

The investigation found some frat members tried to hide what happened.

Piazza's father, Jim Piazza, blamed a "flagrant disregard" for the law and said the death "didn't have to happen".

When a brother insisted Piazza needed medical help, he was confronted and shoved into a wall, the report said.

The Beta Theta Pi International Fraternity suspended and disbanded the Penn State chapter in the weeks after Piazza's death.

"The details alleged in these finding are heart-wrenching and incomprehensible", Barron has said, adding the details outlined in the grand jury report are "sickening and hard to understand".

Piazza was found unconscious on a couch on the main floor when paramedics arrived after a call for help. The video shows his limp body unresponsive as brothers throw liquid on his face in an effort to revive him.

The documents reveal the frat brothers put a weighted backpack on Piazza to keep him from suffocating on his own vomit. "But Davis" frat brothers dismissed him.

And you thought that time you woke up at uni with a dick drawn on your face was bad. Hours later, he again fell, hitting his head off a stone floor.

Come morning, the brothers found Timothy "lying on his back with his arms clenched at his sides and his hands in the air", according to the document.

"It was called a "gauntlet" and they made the pledges, soon to be brothers, run from station to station and drink enormous amounts of alcohol in different phases", said District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller, according to a report by CBS 2 in NY.
