Israel marks 50 years of 'united Jerusalem', but city struggles

President Trump Decries 'Evil Losers' Who Carried Out Manchester Attack

There have been some self-inflicted wounds, most notably Trump's decision to field a journalist's question to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about concerns over the president's decision to share with Russian Federation some classified intelligence that had been obtained by Israel. The UN in December reiterated that position in a Security Council resolution that labeled as illegal all Israeli settlement beyond the 1967 borders, known as the Green Line, including in the eastern part of Jerusalem.

Ambassador Ron Dermer, who was among a group of dignitaries seated in the meeting, clearly displayed his emotions after Mr Trump carried on his speech by saying, "We've just got back from the Middle East".

"We know, for instance, that both Israelis and Palestinians seek lives of hope for their children". What Trump says matters far less than what Trump does, and despite his insistence on portraying the contours of a possible deal as more open-ended than American foreign policy has previously allowed, Trump's actions on Israeli and Palestinian issues so far only point in the direction of two states.

Hamas has said that Trump's labeling it as a terrorist organization demonstrates the American president can not be a fair broker for peace.

Trump advisers vigorously contest the idea that the president's more measured tenor overseas is the result of significant staff intervention, arguing that the president himself is behind the approach for his first foreign trip.

After mentioning threats to Israel from Hezbollah, Hamas and Iran, he said, "not with Donald J. Trump", drawing enthusiastic applause.

Ahead of Trump's visit to Riyadh - which was marked by the U.S. signing a $110 billion weapons deal with the Saudi regime - Middle East and North Africa Director at Amnesty International Philip Luther said that the "potential for President Trump to build toxic alliances with leaders who share his disdain for human rights during his first foray into foreign diplomacy is deeply worrying". He also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump also laid a wreath and spoke at a ceremony at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem on Tuesday. That approach - and the diplomacy and nuclear accord it spawned - did little to endear Obama to leaders in Saudi Arabia or Israel.

The US President changed plans at the last minute, reportedly infuriating the Palestinian Authority by breaking with official protocol.

Israeli officials have routinely claimed that Palestinian armed resistance is part of an global rise in Islamist extremism, while many Palestinians have instead pointed chiefly to the frustration and despair brought on by Israel's decades-long military occupation of the Palestinian territory and the absence of a political horizon.

"We will never return to that situation" of the city divided, he pledged.

Trump vowed not to refer to attackers as "monsters" any longer "because they would like that term". "I will call them from now on losers because that's what they are", he said. The trip included stops in Saudi Arabia and Israel. There, he said, "Peace can never take root in an environment where violence is tolerated, funded and even rewarded".

On Monday, Palestinians also held a general strike in support of the prisoners.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said "several hundred" police officers were deployed to keep the peace. None of the Arab parties are willing to participate in a process whose endpoint is anything but Palestinian statehood, and the fact that they are publicly cooperating with Trump on restarting negotiations is the clearest available sign that the sucker at this poker table is not the Palestinians but Israeli supporters of annexation. He travelled eight km south from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, in the occupied West Bank, to see Abbas.
