Jordanian stabber shot dead in Jerusalem

Trump arrives aboard Air Force One at JFK International Airport in New York

According to The Times of Israel newspaper, a 57-year-old Jordanian national, who entered Israel a few days ago as a tourist, stabbed the policeman in Jerusalem's Old City.

An Israeli police officer was attacked by a Jordanian citizen wielding a knife in the city of Jerusalem on Saturday, local media reported.

"The terrorist rushed toward him, whipped out a knife that he had in his possession, stormed him and began stabbing him". Closed circuit footage released by police shows a bald man in a jacket lunging at the uniformed officer and swiping a knife at him before pinning him to the ground. "Each of them was personal or psychological reasons", - said the press service of the police.

Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad Momani decried the killing of the terrorist in an official statement.

In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement that Israel expected Jordan to condemn the attack.

There was no comment from either the Jordanian or Palestinian side on the report.

Police said the attack was an act of terror.

Israel says the violence is fueled by a Palestinian campaign of incitement. Israel has identified majority as attackers. Peace talks between the sides broke down in 2014.

Saba Nidal Obaid, 20, was shot in the stomach near the village of Nabi Saleh, north of Ramallah, during a protest in support of the 1,500 Palestinians on hunger strike across Israeli prisons. He is due to travel to the Middle East this month and meet separately with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on May 22-23.
