Korea says ballistic missile test successful: state media

South Korea: Warplanes Conduct Drill With U.S. Bombers

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said his country will join the U.S. in taking concrete action against Pyongyang, stressing that they "will not tolerate North Korea's continued provocations that ignore repeated warnings by the global community".

Several rounds of United Nations sanctions have done little to stop the isolated regime from pushing ahead with its ambition to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can deliver a nuclear warhead to the continental US.

A ballistic missile launched early yesterday by the reclusive nation flew 450 kilometres from the eastern coastal city of Wonsan and landed in the Sea of Japan, according to South Korean and United States authorities.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe swiftly condemned the test and vowed concerted action with its U.S. ally.

In tweet on Monday, US President Donald Trump joined the leaders of South Korea and Japan in condemning the test, saying that North Korea had "shown great disrespect" for China by "shooting off yet another ballistic missile".

U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis, however, warned on a Sunday morning television news program that if a diplomatic solution can not be found for the situation with North Korea "it would be a catastrophic war if this turns into a combat".

While North Korean scientists could be tweaking them - for instance, developing a new solid-fuel short-range missile - the North tests these shorter-range missiles much less than it does its less dependable, longer-range missiles.

Japan said the missile landed about 300km from the Oki islands off its west coast.

The ground-based interceptor system is mainly created to counter a North Korean missile threat, but a US official said Tuesday's test has been planned for years and is coincidental to North Korea's increased missile testing this year. This week, the U.S.mil...

Scuds are capable of striking USA troops in South Korea, for instance, and the two newly developed missiles tested earlier this month have potential ranges that include Japan, Guam and even, according to some South Korean analysts, Alaska. China is North Korea's only major ally.

It was the third ballistic missile test-launch since South Korea's liberal President Moon Jae-in took office on May 10 pledging to engage with the reclusive neighbour in dialogue.

Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said North Korea was a factor in, but not the primary reason for the test.

Withdrawing the shield "brooks not a moment's delay as its deployment would make South Korea the first target of strike by neighbouring nuclear powers", it said.

The North's leader Kim Jong-Un had supervised the launch of the "new-type precision-guided ballistic rocket", the official KCNA news agency reported.

A statement from China's foreign ministry after the meeting made no mention of North Korea.
