Multiple Ocean-Goers Warned from OC Waters Due to Sharks

Sharks Spotted Along Southern California Coast, Including 15 at San Onofre Beach; Advisories Issued in Long Beach, Orange County

At least 15 great white sharks were seen swimming close to the surfline near Dana Point, slightly south of popular beaches - and Arizona vacation destinations - such as Newport and Huntington beaches.

The last thing anyone participating in a water activity in the ocean wants to learn is that they are swimming next to a great white shark.

Leeanne Ericson, a 35-year-old mother of three, was with her boyfriend when a shark bit a large portion of the back of her right leg and dragged her under the water. Younger sharks like munching on smaller fish, often hunting just outside of the surf break - although it's not unheard of for juveniles to venture into waist-deep waters.

Lifeguards said the beaches were open Thursday, adding they have regular patrols and were monitoring the beaches closely.

With more and more shark sightings off the Long Beach coast, beachgoers are being warned to enter the water at their own risk.

More sharks were spotted off a southern California beach Wednesday.

Other footage shows shark fins breaking the water, with deeper animals harder to see.

That increased number may just mean there are more sharks, Lowe said.

The water isn't now closed, they report, but signs are posted with a shark advisory, and the earliest it will be lifted is Saturday morning.

According to CBS News, Chris Lowe, a marine biologist, said: "Shark populations are increasing".

"I don't think we should be beach people anymore". But California State Parks developed a shark advisory system, which involves the placement of signs along the water's edge. "They've been protected in US waters since 2005", Lowe explained.

The OCSD sighting is only one of the many reported sightings of great whites in California.
