NDP take lead on Island

Pressure builds on NDP and B.C. Greens to work together in legislature

As of noon today, Elections BC's results show Liberal candidate Jim Benninger now three votes ahead of NDP candidate Ronna-Rae Leonard.

Elections BC said it would once again provide vote count updates Wednesday starting at 10 a.m. Officials say about half of the ballots have been counted in the riding so far.

The recount has New Democratic candidate Ronna-Rae Leonard up by 13, though absentee ballots for the riding have yet to be counted. A one-seat gain for the B.C. Liberals would give them a majority.

The final count in British Columbia's tight and inconclusive election will be known on Wednesday, but the possibility of a judicial recount means the actual outcome might not be known for weeks. He told voters his party is the only one offering something that's different on climate change and on preparing the province for a new economy spurred by technological change. The party is locked in a statistical dead heat with the NDP, according to the latest Mainstreet poll, although the polling group forecasts a Liberal majority.

After the election night count, Leonard was leading by 9 votes.

Meanwhile, with all votes counted Liberal Jas Johal hung on to the seat he won election night in Richmond-Queensborough with 124 votes over NDP Aman Singh.

For Courtenay-Comox that would be approximately 58 votes, for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, about 47 votes, and for Maple Ridge-Mission approximately 52 votes.

Province-wide, the Liberals' lead over the NDP has dropped to a mere 5,316 votes, or 0.27 per cent of all ballots cast.

In Courtenay-Comox, that amounts to a margin of roughly 55 ballots.

Elections BC is due to have the entire final count complete by May 24, however that doesn't mean the results are certain yet.

And if after judicial recount there's a tie, a by-election would be held.
