Pakistan's deputy Senate leader wounded in roadside bombing

Balochistan blast

A roadside bomb struck a convoy carrying the deputy leader of Pakistan's Senate on Friday, killing 25 people and wounding more than 30 others, hospital sources said.

The bombing targeted Haideri when he came out of a religious seminary after addressing a gathering in Mastung area of the province shortly after the weekly Friday prayers.

"Twenty-five bodies have been shifted to two hospitals in Quetta", said a district health officer in Mastung. Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, the senior lawmaker, suffered only minor injuries in the attack.

Television footage from the scene showed several badly damaged vehicles and motorcycles, with windscreens shattered and severe blast damage visible, as the police established a cordon around the site. He was sitting in the auto at the time of blast.

The Senator was slightly wounded but driver and the director staff at the senate accompanying him both were killed, officials confirmed. He is a member of Jamiat e Ulema Islam, a right-wing Sunni Islamist political party that is part of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's coalition government.

The so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group said it carried out the attack using a suicide bomber.

It said a martyrdom-seeking fighter detonated his explosives vest near Haideri's convoy.

According to the Radio Pakistan website, Rabbani termed the incident a "suicide attack".

He said at least one police officer was among those killed in the bombing. Rabbani said that it was suicide attack which targeted Haideri.

Deputy Chairman Senate Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi's convoy was the worst hit in the attack.

However, IS previous year carried out a brutal attack against lawyers in Quetta killing almost 70 people, majority young lawyers as well as at a shrine in the remote Kuzdar area.

Separatist militants in Balochistan have also waged a campaign against the central government for decades, demanding a greater share of the gas-rich province's resources.

Taliban and other terrorists also operate in the province, which shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran.
