Palestinians seek to boycott Pizza Hut over hunger strike 'mockery'

Israel's prison authority on Sunday shared a video of what it says is jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti eating after weeks of leading hundreds on a hunger strike.

The strike, which began on April 17, followed a call by Marwan Barghouti, the most high-profile Palestinian in Israeli detention, for a protest against poor conditions and an Israeli policy of detention without trial that has applied to thousands of prisoners since the 1980s.

The National Committee for the Support of the Prisoners' strike said in a press statement that Israel's media was "waging a serious war of lies and misleading information to create a state of confusion in the Palestinian public and among hunger striking prisoners".

Israeli authorities say 894 Palestinian prisoners have kept up the strike, though Palestinian officials say it is more than 1,000.

At the start of the strike, a group of Israeli settlers held a barbecue in the parking lot of one of the prisons, an apparent effort to taunt those inside who were not eating. He said that "the prisoners will not buy this account from the Israeli side, and they will continue their strike".

Barghouti, 58, is serving five life terms after an Israeli court convicted him of directing attacks during a Palestinian uprising that killed five people.

The Palestinian official stressed that the lives of more than 1500 hunger striking detainees are at real risk, and called for extensive local, regional and worldwide support.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement also called for a worldwide boycott of the chain for its "mocking of the prisoner leader and its involvement in the Israeli occupation".

The initial post has since been removed from Pizza Hut Israel's Facebook page. A spokeswoman for Pizza Hut International apologised for the post.

Pizza Hut said in its apology that the post was "completely inappropriate".

In response to the ad, a large number of Palestinians called for a boycott of the pizza chain on social media. "The local franchisee in the country removed it immediately and the relationship with the agency that posted it was terminated, and we truly regret any hurt this may have caused", it said.

Al-Lolo, the groom, said that "there is no better place to get married, amid the prisoners' hunger strike, than the sit-in tent".
