Prominent detentions of foreigners in North Korea

US citizen detained in North Korea

North Korean state media reports the country has detained a US citizen - the fourth USA citizen being held there amid rising tensions between the two countries.

The college is an unlikely fit in a country that has been condemned by the U.S. State Department for cracking down on freedom of religion.

It said Kim had worked for the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), as had the U.S. citizen detained last month.

"In the past, Pyongyang has demanded that Washington send high-level envoys to obtain the release of US citizens detained in North Korea". DPRK is short for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

The two-paragraph report gave no further details of the arrest of Kim Hak Song.

Both men worked for the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, but it's not clear if there's a connection between the arrests.

Last Wednesday the North confirmed the arrest on April 22 of Kim Sang-Duk, or Tony Kim, for trying to "overturn" the regime. One is former Virginia man Kim Dong-chul, who had been living in the Chinese city of Yanji, near the border with North Korea, and working in a special economic zone in the North as head of a trade and hotel services company.

- American tourist Otto Warmbier was sentenced in March 2016 to 15 years in prison with hard labor for subversion.

"North Korea is persecuting their savior, a person who came to help them".

North Korea has in the past used detained Americans to extract high-profile visits from the United States, with which it has no formal diplomatic relations. Kim Dong Chul, the president of a company involved in global trade and hotel services, was arrested in 2015 and is serving 10 years on espionage charges, CNN reported.

The reported detention comes as tensions on the Korean peninsula run high, driven by harsh rhetoric from Pyongyang and Washington over the North's pursuit of nuclear weapons in response to what it says is a threat of USA -instigated war.

President Donald Trump has been vacillating between calling Kim Jong Un a "smart cookie" and threatening military action against North Korea, while the Kim regime has been warning of a nuclear attack in the face of any US threat.

Some foreigners have said after their release that their declarations of guilt had been coerced while in North Korean custody.
