Sensex zooms 160 points on normal monsoon forecast

The market breadth was positive as 1,551 shares advanced against a fall of 789 shares, while 127 shares were unchanged.

The benchmark BSE Sensex gained as much as 0.91 per cent to 30,207.13, its highest ever. "Financial services stocks were also seen rallying reflecting markets' expectations for further strength in equities", said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Financial Services in a note.

The BSE Sensex zoomed 264 points to quote at an all-time high of 30,197.66, while the broader NSE Nifty scaled 9,390.15.

Mumbai: Taking a cue from global markets, the key Indian equity market indices on Thursday opened higher.

Back home, 14 scrips in the 30-share Sensex pack ended higher, while the remaining 16 closed with losses.

All the major stocks of the index are trading in green. Also, the Nifty metal gained for third consecutive day.

The weekend rally on the Wall Street on strong USA jobs report and pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron's victory in the French presidential election kept vibes positive.




The Indian rupee strengthened by 24-25 paise to 64.38 per U.S. dollar from its previous close of 64.62-63. European indices were trading mixed in their late morning session.

In investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that FIIs purchased stocks worth Rs 893.36 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) divested scrip worth Rs 229.73 crore.

"IT sector stocks witnessed strong buying led by NIITtech and TechM". India VIX closed lower by 4.7% at 11.1 levels.

Sectorwise, the S&P BSE banking index augmented by 202.61 points, followed by the automobile index, which surged by 155.59 points, and the IT index was up by 127.43 points.

However, Bharti Airtel fell 2.21 per cent, GAIL 2.14 per cent, ONGC 1.94 per cent, HUL 1.78 per cent, Axis Bank 1.69 per cent, NTPC 1.39 per cent, Coal India 1.20 per cent, Power Grid 1.14 per cent and Tata Motors 1.08 per cent.

Among the top gainers, Wipro, Axis Bank, Adani Ports, Larsen & Toubro and International Olympic Committee rose 1-3 percent. BSE Small-cap index closed higher by 0.53% at 15,544.
