Shadow Brokers Threaten To Unleash More Hacking Tools

This past weekend, Windows computers around the world were affected by the WannaCry ransomware attack.

Shadow Brokers, the group that leaked parts of United States national security agency's (NSA) cyber weapons stockpile which formed the basis of the recent WannaCry ransomware, said it would release hacking tools every month to those willing to pay for it.

In their post, the Shadow Brokers have come out to warn the NSA and said they have access to "75 per cent of U.S. cyber arsenal".

National security journalist Marcy Wheeler has suggested that Shadow Brokers' recent claims of a new Windows 10 exploit might be a deliberate attempt to inflame tensions between Microsoft and the USA government.

In June, TheShadowBrokers is announcing "TheShadowBrokers Data Dump of the Month" service.

The threat with the most teeth, however, is the claim that The Shadow Brokers could have more exploits to release, targeting mobile devices or Windows 10, as well as leaked data from the SWIFT banking system or nuke and missile programs in Russia, Iran, China or North Korea. Now, it's considering a new subscription model in which it releases new hacking tools to subscribers every month.

The good news is that the "WannaCry" ransomware isn't spreading as quickly as it was just a few days ago, in large part thanks to an enterprising security researcher who accidentally discovered a kill-switch for the malware.

Shadow Brokers first emerged last August, offering to auction hacking exploits it said were used by the NSA's elite hacking team known as Equation Group (officially named Tailored Access Operations). The Shadow Brokers claim not to care what Data Dump of the Month service members do with the exploits.

Stolen network information from Russian, Chinese, Iranian, and North Korean nuclear missile programs.

The post explains Shadow Brokers main motivation in its activities as a competition of sorts, pitting itself against the NSA.

The announcement comes on the heels of a very virulent ransomware outbreak that has used one of the exploits previously leaked by the group. Regarding the type of exploits the Shadow Brokers is promising to deliver, the group says it will deliver exploits for web browsers, routers, handsets and more.

The Shadow Brokers used several colorful insults for Microsoft's top attorney, accusing Microsoft of being BFFs with the Equation Group and having huge contracts which result in Microsoft getting paid millions or billions each year.

According to the Shadow Brokers, Microsoft proceeded to cancel February's Patch Tuesday so they could work on the patches the company delivered in March.

"Repeatedly, exploits in the hands of governments have leaked into the public domain and caused widespread damage", said Microsoft's Brad Smith.
