Snake hunter snags nearly 17-foot python in Florida

Not only does Dusty "Wildman" Crum enjoy what he does, but he also likes what it does to his wallet. His latest catch, was over 16 feet long, "man, that's a big one!"

Because of that, the state pays hunters to capture and kill these animals, and snake hunter Dustin Crum caught a pregnant, 130-pound, 16-foot-10 python earlier this week with his bare hands.

A Florida python hunter, working on a python eradication project commissioned by the South Florida Water Management District, caught the largest snake the current project has seen to date, measuring up at nearly 17 feet long.

SFWMD pays hunters $8.10 an hour, but depending on the size of the snake presented, additional payments are made. The incentives kick in, starting at $50 for a four-foot long snake and $25 for each additional foot above.

"Biggest snake I ever caught in my life right here".

Crum and his crew also captured 78 eggs, so they definitely helped cut down on the growing snake population.

Crum's python catch earned him $375, WFOR-TV reported. This snake was a big catch but still not the largest, that record belongs to a 18-foot python that weighed over 160 pounds.

Authorities created the project because of the ongoing threat the non-native snakes pose to the Everglades residents and native wildlife in the area.

"We're making a difference by taking the eggs out of the ecosystem", Crum said.
