UP home secretary sees 'conspiracy' behind surge in Saharanpur violence

The Uttar Pradesh police refused permission to AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi's visit to Saharanpur.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called the recent incidents of violence in Saharanpur a "well-planned conspiracy" as the city slowly limped back to normalcy.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Friday took on the Yogi Adityanath government on law and order issues in the state that have been grabbing headlines lately.

Rahul Gandhi who has been holding marathon meetings with Congress leaders and AICC office bearers including those from tribal communities had chose to visit Dalit families affected by clashes but the lack of permission by Uttar Pradesh police has come as an obstruction.

When asked why Congress leader Shailja was stopped from visiting Shabbirpur while Deoband legislator Brijesh Singh was allowed, he said there is total ban on visit by any political leaders to Shabbirpur, and if such a thing has happened, action will be taken against those responsible.

He said, "Be it the Greater- Noida Highway rape and murder case, or the Rampur incident, Saharanpur, Muzzafarpur or other numerous incidents, it proves how unsafe the place has become for women and minorities".

On May 5, one person was killed and 16 people, including a head constable, were injured in clashes between the Dalits and the Rajputs in Shabbirpur and Simlana villages.

About a dozen police vehicles were set ablaze and 12 policemen were injured on May 9.

In all, Union Home Ministry officials said over 40 people have been arrested for the violence. In Saharanpur, however, there were hints that the police may have been less than fair.

Saharanpur has made headlines through the month for brutality against lower caste members, especially Dalits.

Had the administration permitted the installation of an Ambedkar statue as well as a procession on "Maharana Pratap Jayanti", the violence would have never occurred, she had said. Clashes again broke out on May 23, and one person was killed and four injured.

Taking note of the violence in Saharanpur, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday suspended the superintendent of police (SSP) and district magistrate (DM) posted there while transferring the divisional commissioner and the deputy inspector general (DIG).
