USA service members killed during raid against ISIS in Afghanistan

At least 17 people were wounded in a suicide-bomb attack on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops as their truck convoy passed down the main road running between Kabul's airport and the USA embassy, police and health ministry officials said. -Afghan raid on Wednesday evening in Nangahar province, where a small but virulent Islamic State cell poses a threat to Afghan and USA coalition forces.

The Pentagon says two U.S. service members were killed in Afghanistan overnight Wednesday, reports the AP.

"The fight against ISIS-K [an abbreviated name for the Islamic Sate branch in Afghanistan's Khorasan province] is important for the world, but sadly, it is not without sacrifice", General John Nicholson, the top US commander in Afghanistan, said in a statement Thursday.

Achin is the same district where a US soldier was killed earlier this month and where the massive ordnance air blast (MOAB) bomb was dropped April 14.

The military personnel died in combat in Nangarhar province, said Pentagon spokesman Capt Jeff Davis.

On Thursday evening the Islamic State group claimed on its website to have repelled an attack conducted by American and Afghan forces and to have caused USA casualties.

At the same time, local forces are struggling to contain an array of militant groups along the country's border with Pakistan, including the Islamic State.

But the offensive comes with Afghan forces, supported by about 8,400 US troops and 5,000 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation soldiers, facing what visiting US Defence Secretary James Mattis described this week as "another tough year".

With more than one third of Afghanistan outside of government control, civilians also continue to bear a heavy brunt, with thousands killed and wounded each year with children paying an increasingly disproportionate price, according to United Nations figures.

President Trump has vowed to go after terrorists and, under his watch, USA airstrikes in Afghanistan have increased 270 percent from January to February, or an increase of 54 strikes to 200, according to Air Force Central Command data.

Two U.S. troops were killed fighting the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS) in Afghanistan, the Pentagon said Thursday. Officials suspect he was killed, but haven't confirmed that. He noted, however, that it had been a long day of fighting.

The Taliban on Friday announced the start of their yearly rebel offensive in Afghanistan.

Security forces blocked access to the area for more than a week after the blast, and Afghan officials estimated that it killed about 100 ISIS militants.

An American special forces soldier was killed while conducting operations against ISIS in Nangarhar on April 8.
