Coalition forces shoot down Iran-made drone in Syria

The US military says it has shot down an armed, Iran-made drone that had been bearing down on its forces near a garrison in Syria's southeast.

The drone was armed and was allegedly prepared to make an attack on USA forces.

This is not the first time the US -led coalition shut down a regime drone.

"This is the same location where another pro-regime UAV dropped munitions near Coalition forces before it was shot down, June 8", the USA military says.

The U.S. military reports they have shot down an armed Syrian drone that was targeting American troops in Southeastern Syria.

The move came after the United States shot down a Syrian Su-22 which, the Pentagon said, had bombed US-backed fighters battling IS near the town of Tabqa in Raqqa province.

Russian Defense Ministry said its own warplanes had been in the same space as the Syrian-U.S. strike, according to The Washington Post.

Binskin said the jet fighters had been occupied recently supporting Iraqi security forces in retaking the city of Mosul, so the suspension had little effect on their operations.

Russian Federation on Monday said it would stop using the so-called "deconfliction" line in response to a U.S. pilot shooting down a regime war plane in northern Syria, with Moscow accusing Washington of failing to issue a warning.

The Russians also said they suspended their hotline that the American and Russian militaries used to prevent collisions of their aircraft in Syrian airspace.

"Coalition forces killed Turki Binali, the self-proclaimed "Grand Mufti" or chief cleric of Islamic State in an air strike on 31 May in Mayadeen, Syria", the coalition said in a statement, using an acronym for the jihadist group.

The repeated incidents in the vicinity of the Tanf camp, where USA forces train and advise local ground forces in the fight against IS, add to soaring regional tensions that could spiral out of control just as the fight against the extremists enters a crucial phase, with US -backed forces pushing into the group's de facto capital, the Syrian city of Raqqa.

The Syrian plane destroyed on Sunday, a Su-22 fighter bomber, was hit after reportedly dropping bombs near the town of Tabqa in Raqqa province.

In another development, the USA military announced officially that coalition forces had killed the top cleric of so-called Islamic State (IS), Turki al-Binali, in an air strike in Syria last month.

"The coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend coalition or partner forces from any threat", OIR said in the statement.

The staunch United States ally in September said it would widen the scope of targets in the air war against IS by allowing its pilots to strike jihadist support and logistics resources in Iraq and Syria. One of the officials said that UAV "was assessed as a threat".
