Arab neighbours say 'nothing to negotiate' with Qatar after cutting ties

Gulf crisis: UAE to punish Qatar sympathisers with 15 year jail term

On top of a possible jail term of 15 years, offenders would also be hit with a fine of at least 500,000 dirhams, (£100,000) the newspaper said.

The UAE on Wednesday renewed its call on Qatar to commit to the rules of security and stability of the Gulf, and stop promoting extremism and terrorism in the region.

US President Donald Trump made a series of tweets on Tuesday calling into question his commitment to the peninsular nation after earlier telling Qatar's ruling emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani that "we've been friends now for a long time".

The move came after Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt along with other Arab and Muslims countries cut off diplomatic ties and transport links to Qatar on Monday.

Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, highlighted a series of steps that Doha should take in order to fix its relations by stopping its support to extremism and terrorism.

In Germany, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir also said he wants to see a response from the Arab countries' demands "soon".

It comes after Riyadh and Abu Dhabi accused Qatar of supporting extremist groups - an allegation Qatar vehemently denies.

The UAE threatened to impose an economic embargo against Qatar while Bahrain said "any options" were on the table as the crisis in the Gulf showed no signs of abating on Thursday.

Newspapers and television channels in the region have also been engaged in a war of words over Qatar's role. Food imports are affected as Saudi Arabia closed its land border with Qatar, stranding thousands of trucks carrying supplies.

The administration of Saudi-backed and resigned Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, Libya, the Maldives, Djibouti, Senegal and the Comoros later joined the camp in ending diplomatic ties.

In a statement, Attorney-General Counsellor Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, announced that the UAE has taken a firm stance against Qatar's hostile and irresponsible policies. The efforts by these countries on Qatar's behalf has raised questions about the future possibility of Doha aligning more closely with them and edging away from the GCC and US. Qatar also hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East, which is the US Central Command's forward headquarters running all operations in the region, staffed by around 10,000 troops. Its foreign minister has struck a defiant tone in interviews, even after anxious residents emptied grocery stores in its capital, Doha, while Saudi Arabia blocked trucks carrying food from entering the country.
