BC Liberals seek Speaker clarifications before Thursday's confidence vote

UPDATE: Horgan, Weaver cry foul on speaker stance

N-D-P house leader Mike Farnworth said Friday that the Opposition will introduce a confidence motion as an amendment to the debate on Thursday's throne speech.

De Jong says the proposed law - which the Liberals opposed in last month's election campaign but supported in last week's throne speech - can be passed in the legislature in the coming days.

British Columbia's Liberal party is being accused of stalling on their expected defeat in the legislature by seeking advice from the Speaker on the procedure surrounding confidence votes.

In a YouTube video posted Thursday, Redies conceded that election results - which left the BC Liberals with a minority government and sparked a co-operation agreement between the BC NDP and the BC Green Party - sent her party a message.

Her promise stands in stark contrast to her tenure as premier when she led a government best characterized as ideologically driven, one person, one party rule; a government that was by turns dismissive, indifferent and always arrogant.

Attorney General Andrew Wilkinson said he was disappointed the opposition parties voted against government bills that all three parties now support, including banning corporate and union money from party financing and capping individual donations at $2,500. "This government has been told repeatedly by the Opposition it's something that can be done in a day, and they are willing to do it in a day, so OK, let's test that proposition".

Green Party leader Andrew Weaver is accusing the BC Liberals of playing games. Rather, it is a tactical measure introduced as the government prepares to face a vote of confidence it is expected to lose.

NDP Leader John Horgan echoed that sentiment in Question Period, taking aim at Premier Christy Clark.

Something that will now most likely take place Thursday.

"The Premier has been clear that she wants to test the confidence of the House, and that should be the first priority when the House reconvenes".

BC Hydro provided me with a summary of alterations for the suddenly discovered burial site (no actual evidence so far) and the suddenly built sweat lodge (road moved to accommodate it).

"I'm still trying to deal with the magnitude of the shifts", Falcon said Friday.

He said the Liberals were unable to offer these new spending commitments - including welfare rate increases and child-care subsidies - before the May election because they did not believe they were affordable then.

Of course, the Liberals shut down those six NDP motions to ban corporate and union donations, only to have a sudden change of heart on the matter after an election that leaves them on the brink of defeat. "Lets get on with the business of government, lets make sure the throne speech gains the confidence of this House ... and we'll make sure we can continue with the strongest economy anywhere in Canada". "If we look at the government's action this is just a last ditch effort to hold on to power".
