US puts troops into fight for Philippines city besieged by ISIS

United States military special operation forces are now helping Philippine miltiary in dealing with Maute terrorists in Marawi City.

"We have indicated to the Philippines. we stand ready to assist if there is a request", she told reporters.

Speaking at the end of her and Mr Turnbull's visit to Singapore, Defence Minister Marise Payne said the Marawi battle was a reminder of what "could prospectively come to pass" if the region was not careful.

A 15-year-old boy was also killed by a stray bullet as he took part in Friday prayers at a mosque in Marawi as the skirmishes raged outside, an AFP video journalist said.

The Agence France-Presse news agency reported the military as saying that the militants occupied about 10 percent of the city and were using bomb-proof tunnels and anti-tank weapons.

Arevalo said fighting resumed on Saturday as troops pushed their advance into three districts where more than 200 militants were still holed up since the hostilities began on May 23.

After days of fighting against #ISIS taking hold of Marawi city in the southern island of the Philippines, U.S. Spec Ops will finally jump into the scene.

The assistance comes after months of strain between the two long-time allies that was stoked by Duterte's pledges to throw U.S. troops out of the country. "American forces have always been present - although they are there primarily for technical and intelligence support".

Philippine troops have been battling the Maute group, which claims allegiance with Islamic State, in Marawi for more than two weeks.

But he had what the White House described as a "very friendly" phone call with President Donald Trump in April, and has since said his differences with the United States were with President Barack Obama's administration.

The US has had a small logistical military presence in the Philippines, although a programme to advise the Philippine army on fighting the Abu Sayyaf militant group was discontinued in 2015.

On Friday, the military said it hoped to liberate the city by June 12, Philippines Independence Day.

The US Embassy said Washington would "continue to work with the Philippines to address shared threats to the peace and security of our countries, including on counterterrorism issues" in its statement Saturday.
