Expansion draft is a gamble for the other 30 NHL teams

Wild Prepare for Entry Draft, Expansion Draft

The teams announced the deal Thursday, about 48 hours before the NHL's trade freeze prior to the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft. The Penguins instead protected Matt Murray a week after the second-year goalie led them to win their second consecutive championship.

At 5 p.m. Saturday, teams must submit their protected lists to the league - either seven forwards, three defencemen and one goalie or eight combined skaters and one goalie, which will be made public at 10 a.m. Sunday. But in protecting seven forwards, the Hawks have to expose van Riemsdyk, who will be entering the past year of his entry-level deal.

Vatanen, a fifth-year player, won't be ready for the start of next season after having surgery to fix a shoulder injury.

The team is still looking to acquire available veteran prospects in the league. They apparently have a deal in place with Vegas to leave their young blueliners alone.

Dustin Brown, who has five seasons and nearly $30 million remaining on his contract, and Marian Gaborik, who has four seasons and almost $20 million left on his deal, aren't exactly appealing options for the Golden Knights, despite each player's impressive resume.

Thornton had a cap hit of $6.8 million and Marleau $6.7 million in the last of three-year deals.

Based on previous mock drafts, McPhee doesn't expect the Golden Knights to have any difficulty getting to the NHL's minimum payroll of 60 percent of the $75 million salary cap.

So for the next few days, McPhee will not only be identifying the best talent available, he'll also be burning up the phone lines trying to turn teams' desperation into an even bigger gain for him. The Wild have too many defensemen, so Jonas Brodins name has been bandied about in trade rumors, and the Ottawa Senators will have to do something because defenseman Dion Phaneuf said he wont waive his no-movement clause.

Among players with previous connections to McPhee available are Stars center Cody Eakin, Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer, Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov and Neuvirth, whom he drafted in Washington.

As for those who spent last season in juniors or college hockey, it would be a bit of a surprise if we saw anything beyond a cameo at PNC Arena, though the future does look bright for Nicholas Roy, Janne Kuokkanen and others.

"It had all the feelings of a trade deadline, but there was conditions", Flames GM Brad Treliving said by phone.

Then comes the start of free agency, which opens on July 1.

Goalie James Reimer was also protected.

Chayka was exaggerating, but only slightly.

Golden Knights submit expansion draft picks by 10 a.m.to the NHL and NHL Players Association. The arrival of the Golden Knights has definitely made things interesting for the other 30 teams in the National Hockey League.

"We have a pretty good idea of what we would do if we had to put the list in right now", he said. Knowing they couldn't, or wouldn't, protect Jannik Hansen, they moved the winger at the deadline to the San Jose Sharks.
