Master Murray schools Khachanov to ease into French Open last eight

Andy Murray discusses his thrilling battle with Juan Martin del Potro after his third-round victory at Roland Garros

Andy Murray cruised into the quarter-finals of the 2017 French Open on Monday and will face Kei Nishikori in the last eight after he defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in what was his easiest test of the tournament thus far.

Getting better and better, Andy Murray worked his way into the quarterfinals of the French Open for the fourth straight year by beating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 here on Monday (June 5).

He took care of Khachanov in clinical fashion, running out a 6-3 6-4 6-4 victor in two hours and four minutes.

Nishikori beat Murray in a dramatic five-setter 1-6 6-4 4-6 6-1 7-5 previous year to reach the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows.

Following the recent terror attacks in Manchester and London, Murray was asked about tennis' ability to promote more altruistic values.

He said: "Terrible tragedy in London, also in Manchester only six or seven days ago".

He said: "I'm sure everyone will join me in sharing their thoughts and prayers of everyone who has been affected by this".

"It s obviously something that has affected large parts of Europe. I'm grateful that I can come out and perform in front of you".

Third seed Stan Wawrinka is yet to drop a set and ended France's hopes for another year with a 7-5 7-6 (9/7) 6-2 victory over Gael Monfils.

Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic reached her first French Open quarterfinal by coming back to edge 97th-ranked Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Wawrinka, who will take on Croatian Marin Cilic for a place in the last four, squandered three set points in the second set tiebreak but prevailed on his fourth attempt.

"I just try to find myself into this zone where I don't do much unforced errors", the Ukrainian said, "and still play aggressive".

Former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka and two runners-up will complete their fourth-round matches on Monday at Roland Garros.

Cilic was leading 6-3, 3-0 after just 48 minutes when Anderson called it quits.

Third-seeded Simona Halep, the 2014 runner-up, faces No. 21 Carla Suarez Navarro.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, 2015 champion Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, the third seed, made light work of tricky French opponent Gaël Monfils with a 7-5, 7-6, 6-2 win.

"After that (first set) I started playing with fewer errors and that was good".

It was a disappointing end to an otherwise positive Roland Garros campaign for Anderson, who was understandably gutted to have to retire in the second set against Cilic.

The second set rubbed salt into the Khachanov confidence with a quick break, drawing a double fault from the young player, and the Briton then held to love, 3-1.
