Newtown parent won't view NBC interview of Alex Jones

The Hollywood Reporter's 25th Annual Women in Entertainment Breakfast in Los Angeles

"Here's the thing, Alex Jones isn't going away", Kelly said, who noted that praise for President Trump has helped expand the conspiracy theorist's influence.

Jones disputants couldn't support Kelly giving the reckless accuser a larger platform - even if it was used to tear him apart - while alt-right supporters wouldn't stand for the mainstream media journalist blindsiding Jones with a "gotcha hit piece" after baiting him with promises of a much softer interview. Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly rated a 0.9 last week. And that had been a steep slide from the 6.1 million who tuned in for her NBC premiere, when she had interviewed Russian ruler Vladimir Putin.

When Sullivan finally saw the interview, however, she thought it was well done, but credited NBC for "strong editing" rather than Kelly. Yet after all that controversy, the interview tied for third in the ratings with a rerun of America's Funniest Home Videos, and was beaten by Fox's U.S. Open Golf Championship coverage and a rerun of CBS's 60 Minutes, which came in second. Can't they just choose not to watch, just as I would not have watched the interview? In the conversation, Kelly was heard promising she would not portray him as "some kind of boogeyman".

The "Infowars" host said at one point that he was playing "devil's advocate" in denying the 2012 mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Shortly before the interview, which was aired on Father's Day, Jones released a video in which he offered condolences to families who had lost children in the "horrible tragedy" of Newtown, but did not refer to his previous comments disputing the killings.

Jones runs the website InfoWars, which has propagated narratives like Sandy Hook and 9/11 are hoaxes without evidence. Relatives of some of the victims also spoke in the Sunday segment on NBC.

One Newtown parent did appear on Kelly's program: Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son, Jesse Lewis, was killed.

Maybe the ratings were hurt by the pre-airing publicity, maybe Jones' audio leak of the interview had an effect.
