NYC subway station evacuated after smoke, loss of power

Photos of the train posted on social media showed its metal side deeply scraped and dented from being dragged along the wall of the subway tunnel.

The Fire Department said that one auto of the train had derailed and three people had been injured.

"The emergency brakes automatically went on".

"We had no idea where the smoke was coming from", Danny said. "And the good thing was that the conductor did a really good job at keeping us informed as to what was going on every 15 to 20 minutes".

The incident at St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem involved a power outage that stopped subway service on the A, B, C and D lines, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

Delays were reported throughout the subway system, which has been plagued by problems this year.

"During the whole time, it was just like 'What's going on?"

He said riders ended up walking through the darkened cars using cellphones for light and exiting onto the platform.

It opened in 2009, replacing an outmoded station that had room for only the first half of a 10-car subway train. "It was a smooth ride, then the train felt jerky. then it gets severe and I saw an explosion, the train comes to a stop - people start screaming", said Kelly Kopp, 48, of Washington Heights. "Shortly after, we smelled a strong gas smell".

At least 34 people were injured in a subway in Harlem (Manhattan) after the train derailed. The South Ferry station on the No. 1 line reopened after $340 million worth of repairs.

A report released earlier this month found that rush-hour cancellations and delays on the railroad are at the highest level in ten years.

In April, a power outage backed up trains around the city and closed a key Manhattan station for 12 hours.

It also comes less than two weeks before the start of Amtrak's summer-long work to fix aging infrastructure at New York Penn Station, a project that is expected to increase subway volume as commuters seek alternatives.

Almost three dozen people were injured, the New York Daily News reported.
