Philippines bars workers from travelling to Qatar

Philippines halts overseas workers amid Qatar crisis

"This is for us to assess the situation because there are so many wild rumors going around and the things are not going well in Qatar", Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said, as quoted by ABS-CBN News.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain had severed relations with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting "terrorism" and Iran.

Qatar has denied the accusation.

"Like for example, you know for a fact that Qatar does not produce its own food".

He said the POLO in Qatar is stocking food for OFWs while recruitment agencies are coordinating with their counterparts to ensure sufficient protection for Filipino workers.

The committee, in consultation with the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Qatar, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and other stakeholders, will continue to monitor the situation in Qatar.

The Philippines has temporarily stopped sending workers to Qatar following its diplomatic row with five countries in the Middle East.

According to latest reports, Government of Philippines has for the time being barred its workers from travelling to Qatar following several Arab countries bust off political ties with the Gulf state.

In an advisory, Philippine Ambassador to Qatar Alan Timbayan also called on Filipinos to remain calm and exercise prudence.

"We are foreseeing a possible problem in Qatar", Bello said at a news conference.

Qatar officials said the move, which includes a food blockade and a stop to flights to and from the seven states, was unwarranted.

Bello can handle the situation in Qatar.

"That's why we really need to make preparatory measures to meet a possible exigency".

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte met in April with King Salman in Saudi Arabia, where hundreds of thousands of Filipinos work as nurses, domestic helpers, drivers, waiters and technicians.

Millions of Philippine citizens work overseas as domestic helpers, ship crew, construction workers and nurses among other jobs.

Supermarket shelves are empty and it was uncertain how stocks could be replenished because supplies come from Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries.

The Philippines central bank estimates the money sent back by its foreign workers past year was $26.9bn (£20.8bn), or about 10% of gross domestic product.

Ople Policy Center, a non-profit organization that assists distressed overseas Filipino workers cited the popular slogan which was featured in posters and coffee mugs worldwide to lessen the fears of OFWs in the Middle East.
