Saudi Arabia captures three IRGC members

Daesh and the region

The announcement comes after Iranian state television accused Saudi Arabia's coast guard of killing an Iranian fisherman on Friday.

Tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, who are regional rivals, has ramped up as each side accuses the other of meddling in conflicts across the Middle East.

An earlier report from the Saudi Press Agency said the Saudi Navy had fired warning shots at the two boats that managed to escape. The other two boats escaped.

Majid Aqa-Babaei, the ministry's director general for border affairs, told the Young Journalists Club on Monday, that, "Saudi Arabia's claim about the arrest of Iranian military forces is not true".

Aghababie said on Monday that a Saudi claim the boats entered the kingdom's waters had not been proven.

Al-Abadi arrived in Tehran after he visited Riyadh for talks with Saudi Arabian officials.

Both countries have been engaged in proxy wars in Syria, Yemen and support for oppositions in respective countries.

"The arrest of a number of the IRGC forces (by the Saudi coastguards) in the bordering area of Saudi Arabia and Iran in Persian Gulf is a mere lie", Sardar Sanaei, the political deputy of the IRGC, was quoted as saying. Iran, along with Russian Federation, supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against various insurgent and jihadist groups attempting to overthrow his governement. Shia Muslim Iran repeated accusations that Saudi Arabia funds Sunni Islamist militants, including Islamic State.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (R) receives Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, June 19, 2017. Since then, Saudi Arabia has attempted to dislodge the group, which it accuses Iran of providing arms to, through a massive military campaign.
