Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths 'gutted' after England's last-gasp leveller

Gareth Southgate

"It's annoying for them to do so much and have a result that could have been one of the best results ever". It's special. It could be a big point for us.

"To do what they did was phenomenal".

Hart was slated for his contribution to Leigh Griffiths' double free-kick, as well as a moment of madness that involved a back-pass.

"I've seen Scotland's best ever free-kick and then I've also seen Scotland's second best ever free-kick", Strachan said.

"To put the work that he put in and then have a free-kick, when you're exhausted at the end of the game, and be able to execute it is phenomenal".

Southgate reacted by sending on Oxlade-Chamberlain for Rashford in the 65th minute and five minutes later, the Arsenal man put England ahead.

Southgate admitted that Captain Kane and co still have a lot to learn if they are to banish past failures and succeed in next year's World Cup finals in Russian Federation.

England trained with the Royal Marines in the build up to the match, and Kane praised the determination of the squad.

"Scotland's no easy place to come, especially when you're 2-1 down in stoppage time; it makes it a little bit sweeter that we got something from it".

"It is a good point away from home".

Kane had come close on several occasions as Scotland sat in with a 5-4-1 formation, although the hosts improved for a spell after Jake Livermore's deflected effort hit the post just after half-time.

"We can go in against what is deemed a very good team and match them in every department and almost beat them".

Griffiths felt Scotland had done themselves proud, despite not being able to hold on for what would have been a famous win. And they keep coming back again.

"But Harry Kane does what Harry Kane does best by scoring right at the death and costing us the three points".

But Leigh Griffiths broke his worldwide duck in sensational fashion as he curled home a 25-yard free-kick in the 87th minute - and then repeated the feat three minutes later.

"We proved that on our day we can match anybody". I see body language which says we are still in the game.

"It was incredible at the end", he added.

"We have four games left and four very winnable games and as long as we take the performances from the last two games we will give ourselves a great chance". When they go back to England they'll think about the fact it's a hard match in terms of the calendar. There was a free kick we shouldn't concede and then two moments of real quality from Griffiths.

"The first free-kick is careless, the second free-kick is a slip, so I'm not sure there's a lot we could have done about that. I think it's a significant goal for many different reasons".

"Whatever anybody thinks about us as a group of players, one thing you can't question is their personality, character and commitment".

"We got ourselves into decent positions, but could not finish".
