Senate Committee Hearing With Intelligence Chiefs

Donald Trump asked top intelligence agent if he could intervene with Comey on FBI Russia probe: officials

Trump similarly approached Adm. Mike Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency, to ask him to publicly deny the existence of any evidence of coordination between the Russians and the Trump campaign, as the Post previously reported, according to current and former officials. Martin Heinrich, a New Mexico Democrat. I'm going to start with you.

Those comments throw cold water on the report, but they don't directly address whether or not Trump asked him to intervene - only focusing on how he potentially felt and responded. I'm simply asking did that conversation occur? Coats made the obvious analysis of the situation and decided that hitting up Comey to take it down a notch would be "inappropriate", which put an end to the issue.

"You realize how simple it would simply be to say, 'No, that never happened, '" Heinrich said.

"I do not share with the general public conversations that I have with the President or many of my colleagues within the administration that I believe should not be shared", Coats repeated.

ROGERS: I stand by my previous statement, sir.

However, the responses didn't quell the burning questions among reporters and critics of the Trump administration, as both men also declined to answer other questions during the public session.

5. Will the White House exercise executive privilege?

Trump has consistently pushed back against suggestions that his campaign coordinated with Russian Federation and says the investigations into the matter are a hoax.

"What you feel isn't relevant, admiral", King fumed. "Why are you not answering these questions?"

"I have never been pressed", he said.

Wednesday's hearing was supposed to be focused on the pending renewal of the 702 program of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that allows and governs intelligence collection overseas, but lawmakers from both parties used this chance to publicly question top American intelligence officials on the Russian Federation investigation. Rosenstein wouldn't answer questions posed by Sen. "At some point these facts have to come out".

The panel also questioned Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who testified publicly for the first time since Comey was sacked.

He was referencing a report from The Washington Post late Tuesday that Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats had been pressured by Trump to intervene with Comey. "'Do you solemnly swear to give the committee the truth, the fully truth, and nothing but the truth so help you God?' You answered yes to that".

The top Democrat on the committee said media reports that Trump tried to intervene in the probes are jarring. Kamala Harris' questioning of Rosenstein, Sens.

On March 22, less than a week after being confirmed by the Senate, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats attended a briefing at the White House together with officials from several government agencies. "And the committee is on notice to provide the witnesses the courtesy - which has not been extended all the way across - extend the courtesy for questions to get answers".

Four top intelligence officials are fielding questions Wednesday on whether Trump intervened into the Justice Department's investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. elections, the latest development in a tumultuous 24 hours.
