'Transformers' tops box office but is biggest in China

Yet having hoped the franchise would have faced extinction, three years later we're looking towards another film in the seemingly unstoppable juggernaut of the Transformers series, this one subtitled The Last Knight.

The action film starring Gal Gadot has made a total of US$318.3 million (RM1.3 billion) in domestic ticket sales in four weeks, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations. "It truly is the global box office that can save the day and make the North American numbers less of a bitter pill to swallow for the studios", says analyst Paul Dergarabedian of comScore.

The Last Knight opened to $13m in Korea while AoE opened to $15.8M. Transformers has been on a downward trajectory over the course of the last few installments, so it's clear the interest isn't as high as it once was. Almost a month after opening, Patty Jenkins' "Wonder Woman" continues to be a major draw. Fortunately for the studio, that looks to be just what they got, as the global total is $265.2 million so far.

Transformers: The Last Knight officially holds the record for the smallest opening weekend in the franchise thus far.

Marketing this film was a nightmare for Paramount's team, who were forced to try and sell a film via promos in which the only apparent distinguishing features from the previous movies were Optimus Prime being teased as a villain and some nebulously-explained connections between the Transformers and Arthurian knights.

In a tie for second place, Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman" and Pixar's "Cars 3" both reported 25.175 million US dollars for the weekend. It'll be interesting to see the order of finish next weekend as the critically acclaimed action drama Baby Driver arrives on June 28th followed by Despicable Me 3 and The House on June 30th. The film is doing great despite the poor reviews from the film critics.

Final figures are expected Monday. The film has grossed total $41 million from the China box office alone.

The rest of the top five went to holdovers. Clearly, the negative word-of-mouth didn't do the film any favors, and its overall appeal was greatly limited. The previous film, 2014's "Age of Extinction", made $858.6 million of its $1.1 billion global haul overseas.

The Mummy continued to fade away quickly, down 60% in its third weekend to $5.8 million. Age of Extinction managed $245 million from the USA compared the previous instalment (Dark of the Moon) that grossed $352 million back in 2011.

"Rough Night", $4.7 million ($2 million international). In North America, the movie has earned $160 million and internationally it has grossed $517.8 million, for a worldwide total of $677.8 million. The animated family film now stands at $65.7 million.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", $3 million.
