It was especially sensitive given tensions sparked by the Trump administration s attempted travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority nations and his previous remarks, including a 2015 statement that "Islam hates us". He pledged deeper ties with the Middle East to tackle terrorism and encouraged more economic development in the region.

Mr Trump offered few indications of whether he planned to shift USA policy to better-fight terrorism. Drive them out! Drive them out of your places of worship!

US President Donald Trump said Arab leaders need to take the lead in confronting extremism, and noted that they had suffered the deadliest toll of "fanatical violence" and that there was a humanitarian and security disaster that was spreading across the region.

The closest Trump came to acknowledging the human rights situation was a call for the region's leaders to stand together against "the oppression of women".

When asked about why Melania and Ivanka opted not to cover their heads in Saudi Arabia, the White House said that there was no requirement to wear such coverings, CNN reported.

Mr Trump's remarks came in a meeting with dozens of regional leaders who gathered in Riyadh for a summit with the U.S. president and Saudi King Salman.

Iran lambastedTrump had special criticism for Iran, which just saw reformist President Hassan Rouhani re-elected, saying the country has "for decades. fuelled the fires of sectarian conflict and terror".

Reports have also emerged that Trump called Comey "a nut job" and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified a senior White House official as a "significant person of interest" in its probe of Russian meddling.

Soon after Trump embarked on his trip on Friday, he was hit with more accusations that, with Comey's firing on May 9, he was trying to squelch a federal investigation into his campaign's ties with Russian Federation past year.

The president, who is known to tear asunder the White House's plans with a provocative tweet or offhand comment, has largely stuck to the script for opening days of the trip.

On Sunday he met Arab leaders including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Qatar s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Bahrain s King Hamad.

Trump signed deals worth almost $400 billion.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women are not legally allowed to drive. As the participants laughed, Trump responded: "I agree".

While in Riyadh, Ivanka attended a roundtable of women led by Princess Reema bint Bandar, deputy president of the Women's Sports Authority, and praised Saudi Arabia for recent strides in empowering women, according to ABC News. He sent his daughter, Ivanka, instead.
