Trump Weighs Firing Mueller, According To Confidante

Prominent Trump supporters are pushing for firing of Special Counsel Robert Mueller

The comments come amid increasing frustration at the White House and among Trump supporters that the investigation will overshadow the president's agenda for months to come - a prospect that has Democrats salivating.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel; I think he's weighing that option", Ruddy told NewsHour's Judy Woodruff.

US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said he would be "surprised" if Trump fired Mueller. Ruddy never spoke to the President regarding this issue. "With respect to the subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment".

Trump would have to get Attorney General Jeff Sessions to do the sacking; it's unclear whether Sessions would agree, given that he had recused himself with regard to all things Russian Federation probe.

High-profile supporters of Donald Trump are turning on the man investigating Russian interference in the United States election and possible collusion with the president's campaign - with one suggesting Mr Trump was considering "terminating" him.

The reports Mueller may be replaced drew immediate outrage from Democrats.

"I mean Robert Mueller, there's some real conflicts", he explained.

"I think the best thing to do is to let Robert Mueller do his job". A special counsel is much harder to fire. He's bringing in some of the top prosecutors that have worked in the Justice Department.

Trump, however, lacks the legal authority to directly fire Mueller.

Collins' question wasn't the only time the Mueller investigation came up during Rosenstein's hearing on Capitol Hill. Is President Trump prepared to let the special counsel pursue his investigation?

Mueller has always been widely respected by many in Washington from both sides of the aisle, with many lawmakers praising Deputy Rob Rosenstein's appointment of the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

What's more, regulations in the Justice Department would not allow Trump to fire Mueller himself.

However, during his testimony and in answering senators' questions, Sessions is prepared to address some outstanding lines of inquiry regarding the Russian Federation investigation and his time as attorney general. Rosenstein would be the one to fire Mueller, which he repeatedly assured senators Tuesday he would not consider without "good cause".

"I appointed him; I stand by that decision, " he said. Ruddy agrees that the move would be a wrong move, but dismissed the investigation Mueller is overseeing. He did not notify White House or Attorney General in advance of his move.

Comey leaked those memos because Trump was trying to get a legitimate and important investigation ended, a clear case of corruption.

"You can raise those concerns" to both Mueller and the DOJ, Rosenstein told Graham.
