Trump will not block ex-FBI director's testimony

The Latest WH says Trump won't block Comey testimony

White House officials said Monday that President Donald Trump will not invoke executive privilege to try to block James Comey, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director he fired, from testifying before Congress this week, clearing the way for a hearing that may be the most anticipated in Washington in months if not years.

"The president's power to assert executive privilege is well established", principal deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters during the daily press briefing.

The significance of the move lies in the fact that Comey was probing alleged Russian hacking in last year's US presidential election.

Comey's highly anticipated testimony will be the first time he has made public comments since being terminated as director last month.

Anticipation over Comey's appearance will return the administration to a state of siege, which has been partially lifted in recent weeks during Trump's foreign trip and the build up to his decision to quit the Paris climate pact.

Senator Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, said he expected Comey's testimony would not be his last before Congress.

As FBI director, Comey was known for penning memos after meetings and, in February, wrote a memo that reportedly said Trump asked him to shut down the probe into Flynn.

A second White House official confirmed that the issue is under review.

A source told CBS News Comey will remain available to Mueller and investigators. "You don't do that I think by invoking executive privilege on a conversation you had apparently with nobody else in the room". The panel is investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and whether the president or his associates were involved.

Should Comey deliver devastating testimony on any of those questions that suggests Trump obstructed justice, he will significantly worsen the political challenges facing the President.

Former acting Attorney General, however, has testified that Flynn's conversation with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak was not accurately disclosed to members of the Trump White House - potentially opening himself up to blackmail.
