Two more arrested for violence at Turkish ambassador's DC residence

Police secure the street outside the Turkish embassy on May 16 after visiting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's security detail clashed with pro Kurdish and pro Armenian protesters wounding at least eight people

Two Turkish American men have been arrested for attacking protesters outside the Turkish Embassy during President Tayyip Erdogan's visit to the United States in May, Washington, DC police said on Wednesday.

Two other defendants are Canadians, while the rest are Turkish nationals - nine security officers and three police officers, all part of Erdogan's entourage.

"In Washington, D.C., we do not care particularly what your views are, what you support or what you do not support", Newsham said.

A second suspect who also seen in videos kicking a protestor, Virginia resident Sinan Narin, was charged with aggravated assault. Ellialti also faces a charge of felony aggravated assault.

Erdogan's security detail returned with him to Turkey after his visit, so it was unclear if any would face any immediate US legal repercussions. Charges have been filed, but without extradition, it's unclear what can actually be done about the felony and misdemeanor counts levied against the Turkish citizens in Erdogan's employ. It also accused US authorities of roughing up Erdogan's security detail.

Investigators were able to identify the suspects using video footage, Newsham told reporters. The brawl was just business as usual for Erdogan's team, for whom even a few criminal charges were worth the opportunity to give those protesting a gathering of Turkish-Americans a taste of home.

The Turkish Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"We will defend the First Amendment, and we will make sure our laws are being enforced", Bowser said Thursday.

The charges come a month after a number of people were injured when Turkish government security forces charged protestors in front of the Turkish ambassador's residence.

"The police did the best they could under the circumstances", Newsham said.

The clash happened as Erdogan arrived at the ambassador's residence after a White House meeting with President Donald Trump on May 16.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry then summoned the United States ambassador to Turkey to complain about the treatment of the detained security guards.

On the day of the violence, police detained two members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's security detail but released them shortly afterward. Some Turkish citizens and the head of the president's security detail stepped in. Men in dark suits and others were recorded repeatedly kicking one woman as she lay curled on the pavement.

The foreign ministry said that United States officials did not take necessary measures to protect the Turkish president, leading to security breaches.

"We don't have any information right now to suggest that we would have probable cause to make an arrest of the president", Chief Newsham said.

On June 6th, with a vote of 397 to 0, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously condemned Turkey in response to the attacks, taking a powerful stand against Ankara's attempts to export its violence and intolerance to America's shores.
