White House discussing moving Spicer to senior communications role

Sean Spicer Is Reportedly Leaving The Briefing Room

"As he did in the beginning, Sean Spicer is managing both the communications and press office", said White House deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders.

Reporters on Monday cried foul after the White House announced that it would hold another daily briefing off-camera and off-mic, further fueling concerns among journalists that the Trump administration is ducking questions from the press.

Bloomberg reported that President Trump is considering elevating Spicer to a more senior role that will broadly focus on communications strategy.

In response to networks like CNN that made a decision to broadcast audio of the briefing, even without a visual to accompany, the White House barred attendees from doing that, too. Audio coverage was also prohibited, leaving reporters' Twitter feeds as the only real-time coverage of the back-and-forth.

"There are days that I'll decide that the president's voice should be the one that speaks and iterate his priorities", Spicer added.

- Jim Acosta (@Acosta) June 19, 2017At off camera no audio briefing, Spicer took a question from a Russian reporter but not from CNN.

ACOSTA: It's a really good question, Brooke, and it's a question that I would ask, but unfortunately at this White House, we wouldn't have the video or the audio to show you the answer to that question, because of the stonewalling that we're getting over here at the White House. Whether Spicer will stay at the White House in a different role is still unclear. "He will make another comment today at the technology summit". "[Without the briefing] they would have additional time to work their own sources, and maybe sources outside the administration would come up with better stories".

Acosta said on CNN that Spicer is getting to the point "where he's just kind of useless" and called the briefings "basically pointless". "It's also useful for reporters because reporters can let the White House know what issues are going to be coming up and how people are interpreting what it is they're doing".

Sanders said in a statement, "We have sought input from many people as we look to expand our communications operation".
