Zarif: Intelligence shows S. Arabia promoting terror in Iran's borders

Ramadan toll shows Islamic State in pitched recruiting race

"But Iran is not a strategic partner of Pakistan as Saudi Arabia is", said Karim who is a doctoral researcher focusing on Saudi foreign policy, decision making and its implications for the politics and security of the middle east.

"You and your agents are the source of instability in the Middle East...who created Islamic State?"

"America is a terrorist country and backs terrorism. therefore, we can not normalize ties with such country", he said.

He stressed that relations between the American and Iranian governments would continue to be at a standstill because "most of our problems with them can not be resolved". Major General Mostafa Izadi, deputy chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, said Sunday that the government in Tehran had "documents and information" showing Washington's support of the extremist Sunni Islamist group.

But US president Donald Trump was an exception.

Iran repeated accusations that Saudi Arabia funds Islamic militants including Islamic State.

"Mohammad Javad Zarif made the statement at the opening ceremony of the Oslo Forum in Norway's capital on Tuesday, also attended by European Union foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, and former USA secretary of state John Kerry, IRNA reported".

He said this could be along the lines of the 1975 Helsinki accords - agreements signed during the Cold War to reduce tensions between western and Communist nations.

Zarif lamented that Washington "has not lived up fully to its commitment under the deal", while, Iran, for its part, has been "time and again" found in compliance with its provisions by the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA].

"The fact IS claimed responsibility proves that they [Saudi Arabia] were involved in the brutal attack".

He added: "The US must know that the Islamic Republic will not back down from positions such as battling oppression and defending Palestine and will spare no efforts towards defending the people's rights".

Also, on June 6, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said Iran had to be "punished" for what he called "its interference in the region".

Commenting on the statement at the time, Zarif called it "repugnant" and slammed a new round of U.S. sanctions against Iran recently approved by Senate.
