Community mourns woman shot by Mpls

A woman who called 911 to report a possible assault in the alley behind her home was fatally shot by a Minneapolis police officer Saturday

Don Damond, Justine's fiance, wondered how police ended up killing the person who had placed the 911 call.

An Australian woman has been shot and killed by a U.S. police officer near her home in Minneapolis.

Justine Damond, from Sydney, died on Saturday night. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says that police were called about a possible assault at around 11:30pm.

"At one point an office fired their weapon, fatally striking a woman", the local police department said.

Officials say the officers' body cameras weren't turned on and a squad camera didn't capture the shooting.

The Star Tribune quoted three sources which it did not name as saying Justine Damond was in her pajamas when a police auto responding to a 911 call pulled into the alley.

Multiple eye witnesses have said Damond approached the police cruiser in her pajamas.

Noor is a second-year officer who was the department's first Somali-American hire.

"I just can't believe she's gone so young, and so tragically", said Sterlace.

6 p.m.: Hodges holds a news conference, saying she is "heartsick and deeply disturbed" as a result of the incident.

The friend told The Star Tribune the woman worked as "a spiritual healer", remembering her as "the most loving woman". According to Reuters, the officers' body cameras were not switched on.

It has emerged that the policeman identified as firing the shot that killed Ms Damond, Mohamed Noor, is a relatively inexperienced officer of just two-years' service and has three complaints filed against him.

Investigators are seeking video of the incident.

Damond, a native Australian, was reportedly engaged to be married next month.

The woman's family in Australia released a statement through the country's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, saying it's a "very hard time", according to NBC News. The source said that Noor was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the shooting.

The son of Damond's fiancé addressed the shooting in a live Facebook video Sunday afternoon.

They also put out a brief statement on behalf of the woman's family.

Damond was out of town on a business trip at the time of the incident.

"I mean ask anybody here, they're shocked", said a student of Damond's, Corey Birkholz, who was amongst the 200 who gathered at a vigil to commemorate their teacher.
