Thousands of Microsoft Jobs Will Be Laid Off Soon, Company Confirms

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella

In a move to focus on the growing cloud business, Microsoft on Thursday announced a major reorganisation that will lead to almost 3,000 job cuts in sales staff outside the U.S., media reported. "Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis", a Microsoft spokesperson says.

Microsoft will reportedly announce a major reorganization this week to focus on its cloud business.

Microsoft acknowledged Thursday that it plans to eliminate up to 3,000 jobs, concentrated in the company's sales group, as it repositions the business to focus more on cloud computing.

Microsoft has 121,000 employees on its payroll with 71,000 of them living in the US. Microsoft declined to disclose how many employees are being let go. Microsoft is now laying off employees by the thousands.

The restructuring largely affects the software giant's sales operations outside the USA under chief marketing officer Chris Capossela, executive vice presidents Judson Althoff and Jean-Philippe Courtois.

The company has been beefing up its cloud software and services as it tries to unseat the sector's top provider Amazon Web Services (AWS). And businesses require specialized cloud software, tailored for their industry.

Microsoft will cut upwards of 3,000 jobs as part of a shake-up of its sales staff.

Mid-year re-structurings have become the standard at Microsoft ever since former CEO Steve Ballmer announced a company-wide restructuring in 2013 - shortly before he departed from the company and current chief executive Satya Nadella took over in 2014.

The software giant did not specify how many jobs would be cut.

Microsoft's goal isn't to cut costs, and the move is instead a change to how Microsoft does sales. And Microsoft is using this action as an opportunity to cull other employees, including those that are close to retirement and will be offered an early leave.
