Turkey's Erdogan Says Iraq Should Avoid Independence Referendum

HDP announces it will join 'justice rally' in Istanbul's Maltepe

Hundreds of thousands of people joined a rally in Istanbul at the end of a 25-day "march for justice" against the government of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"Nobody should think this march has ended; this march is a beginning", Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the Republican People's Party, known as CHP, said as he walked onto a stage to rippling cheers.

In the latest crackdown, Turkish police on Wednesday detained Amnesty International's Turkey director and other activists on charges of membership in a terror group sparking a new uproar among rights advocates.

The rally could be one of the biggest opposition protests seen in Istanbul since the mass 2013 demonstrations against Erdogan's rule sparked by the planned redevelopment of Gezi Park in the city.

Turkey subsequently embarked on the most extensive crackdown in its modern history, arresting over 50,000 people and sacking 100,000 more from their jobs. It was the grand finale of a three-week march for justice that was launched by Turkey's main opposition party leader.

After arriving from Ukraine, Tillerson met with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu and later held talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, officials on both sides said. "We marched for those dismissed from their public duties, for child workers, for villagers, for jailed and lynched soldiers".

But Kilicdaroglu said the opposition had no alternative because Turkey's courts had been politicised, "the powers of parliament have been seized" and the media had been muzzled.

The coup's defeat even spawned an officially-approved anthem that blares out at Erdogan rallies: "On the night of July 15, the weather was hot/ An attempt of betrayal that burned the heart". We walked for the academics who were thrown out of universities'. However, his march across the country captured a piece of Turkey's national political conversation.

One man, who gave his name as Huseyin, said he had travelled from Ankara to protest the state of emergency.

Turkey issued arrest warrants for 72 university staff, state media said on Monday, including a former adviser to the main opposition leader who staged a mass rally on Sunday to protest a crackdown since a failed military coup past year.

Giving a closing remarks on the second day of the World Petroleum congress, Secretary of State said, "We must put the relationship on the mend, re-establish it on a proper basis, and then strengthen it, going forward". Human-rights groups have said the president and his supporters used the coup as a pretext to quash dissent, and that prison authorities have denied medical care and adequate food and resorted to torturing detainees in some instances.
