Facebook Axed Anonymous Company Chat Group Over Harassment

There was no kind of intimation or explanation for arrestment of Facebook Group. At a company meeting, Mark Zuckerberg was asked why the group had been shut down, replying that the group had been used by employees to harass people and this behavior would not be tolerated.

In a statement to Business Insider, Facebook said the group violated the company's Terms of Service.

Anyway, no doubt an unspoken motivation here is Facebook wants to seem like a neutral platform. The forum was closed in December 2016. According to Business Insider, after Facebook made a decision to shut down the group, an anime character and the words "Silenced, but not silent" started appearing across the company campus.

The anonymous group reportedly became a key place of discussion for right-leaning Facebook employees, perhaps because they felt that they could express their conservative views more openly in an anonymous forum. James Damore was sacked and quickly became a celebrity to members of the "alt-right", who said he represented an example of Silicon Valley's intolerance for conservative viewpoints. Though the forum was shut down previous year, it was reported only on Wednesday. And as Facebook centers its mission statement on creating groups for its consumer service, Facebook Anon is a telling example of how one of its own internal groups backfired.

He has vowed to remove hate speech from Facebook and says he is committed to making "Facebook a place where everyone can feel safe". If the platform finds out you're using a fake name or a borrowed identity, it will shut down your account.

Facebook had previously run into problems with the anonymous group during the Black Lives Matter movement a year ago, around the time Zuckerberg spoke out against workers who crossed out "Black Lives Matter" and wrote "All Lives Matter" on the walls of the company's California headquarters. The news reports also referenced sources that said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had earlier cited harassing messages as a reason for the site's dismantlement.

Facebook has had a tough time managing diversity in the workforce. The group had hundreds of members, and content posted there was talked about throughout the company, reports Business Insider.

Social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have been instrumental in the rise of the divisive political climate, from their role in helping people spread fake news during the presidential election to the use of Twitter as a megaphone by President Trump, whose views white supremacists and neo-Nazis are cheering, echoing or amplifying. Initially, the platform was used to discuss ethical issues such as taking home extra food from the company's cafeteria.

While this group was never meant to be exclusively for conservatives, it eventually morphed into a quasi-safe space for right-leaning employees.

"I don't think they really thought there would be too many people on the Trump side", the former employee said. "We do it because we believe that no one-not the government and not private commercial enterprises - should decide who gets to speak and who doesn't".
