Archbishop Desmond Tutu urges Suu Kyi to speak up over Rohingya crisis

Myanmar's Rohingya Crisis Escalates

But Yanghee Lee, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar said Suu Kyi is a politician after all and everyone forgets expecting a high moral voice from her.

The figures she gave are far higher than official tolls, which total 432, including 15 security personnel and 30 civilians - seven Rohingyas, seven Hindus and 16 Rakhine Buddhists.

"The massacre and ethnic cleansing of the Rohingyas was a slap in the face of Nobel peace prize victor and the leader of Myanmar Suu Kyi, who failed to protect the Rohingya Muslims and other minority communities", read the resolution.

In a letter Tutu told his "dearly beloved younger sister" that "the images we are seeing of the suffering of the Rohingya fill us with pain and dread".

It's not easy to defend Aung San Suu Kyi's actions, or the lack of it, as the crisis in Myanmar's northwestern Rakhine region spirals out of control.

On Thursday, former South African archbishop Desmond Tutu urged Suu Kyi to intervene to protect the Rohingya.

"Well let me be perfectly clear".

Malala earlier this month condemned the violence against Rohingya, saying she was brokenhearted to see how brutally Myanmar was treating its own people.

In an interview at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, where she is a professor in the department of child psychology and education, Lee said it was "highly possible" the government had "underestimated numbers". However, he said the world leaders were unlikely of any help because of diplomatic reasons.

"Why is the Atlantic World political establishment not acting?"

The atrocities inflicted on the Rohingya are horrific. "The conventional thinking is that, with Myanmar's proximity to China, in chess terms, Myanmar has the status of a knight or perhaps even a rook in the old geopolitical game Zbigniew Brzezinski once infamously characterized as 'the Grand Chessboard, '" Grossman said.

"But now it looks like she's reneging on the deal. and it's a gut punch to the world community that supported her". "That agenda staked no small part of the accompanying tactical plan on a policy of not-so-cautious engagement with Myanmar", he added.

The Rohingya have been subject to communal violence by extremist Buddhists for years, forcing large groups of Muslims to take perilous journeys and seek refuge in Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries. The way to peace, justice, and human rights will come through democratic rule of law, and not a return to military rule.

Human history is full of conflicts based on religion.

Between Trudeau's careful language, opposition attacks, and Canadians' growing desire to see its government condemn foreign military violence on innocent people, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland struck a harder tone. Rohingya activists, however, dispute that version. There is, to the best of my knowledge, no principle in Islam, - be it from al Quran, Hadith or Sunnah - which can be invoked to argue that we should only be concerned about injustice when the underlying oppression is religiously motivated.

This photo taken on September 5, 2017 shows Rohingya refugees from Myanmar's Rakhine state set up shelters at a refugee camp at Unchiprang near the Bangladeshi border town of Teknaf.

Few Canadians know of the Rohingya and their plight in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). The Rohingya are explicitly forbidden from becoming citizens of Burma and have no political weight whatsoever.

"The Rohingya cause is undoubtedly a genuine and important cause which should be drawing us together instead of pulling us apart". "At the same time, we can't be hosting so many people in this country".
